DC Universe Reportedly Safe From Controversial Batgirl & Coyote Vs. Acme Tax Cancellations

Summary
  • The cancellations of Batgirl movie and Coyote Vs. Acme caused concerns for those invested in the DC Universe.
  • However, reportedly, upcoming DC Universe movies and TV shows aren't in danger of being cancelled for tax reasons.
  • This would make sense, as the unique position of the DCU places it in a safer vantage point than the movies that have been cut.
James Gunn's DC Universe will reportedly not be able to get the same treatment by Warner Bros. Discovery for tax cuts like the Batgirl movie and Coyote Vs. Acme. With multiple DC Universe movies and TV shows coming up, a new era is coming for some of the most iconic superheroes and villains. However, the road to the fresh continuity has been a rocky one, as several DCEU films struggled in 2023, and 2022 wasn't an easy year for Warner Bros. Discovery, as they decided to ax Batgirl, which was set to arrive on Max (formerly known as HBO Max) despite having wrapped principal photography.
While the Batgirl movie was controversially canceled, Coyote Vs. Acme was also shelved recently, only for Warner Bros. Discovery to undo their decision. This has raised questions about Gunn's DC Universe and whether the studio could make similar moves with any of the upcoming projects. However, this doesn't appear to be the case, as Deadline reports that Warner Bros. Discovery won't be able to make last-minute decisions to kill off upcoming DC Universe movies and TV shows from Gunn and Peter Safran, stating that, "greenlights moving forward are bonafide and not in danger of any tax tricks." Based on the reasons given for cancelling the other two movies, it would certainly appear the DCU is safe from a similar treatment, based both on the timeline of its creation, and the importance of providing a less tumultuous on-screen franchise for the DC brand.
