"You Picked The Wrong Guy": Zack Snyder Singles Out Where His DC Vision First Clashed With Warner Bros

Summary
  • Zack Snyder explains that his approach to DC movies was not focused on creating mass appeal, but instead on making something cool that he personally enjoyed.
  • The need for a big cinematic universe ultimately clashed with Zack Snyder's more subdued idea for live-action DC characters.
  • The obstacles Snyder faced prevented his vision for the DCEU from thriving, leading to the franchise's early conclusion and reboot.
DCEU director Zack Snyder addresses his approach to the Snyderverse and its characters and explains why he wasn't the right person to lead a cinematic universe. Launched in 2013, Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe attempted to be an expansive franchise around DC's vast library of characters. However, several obstacles prevented Zack Snyder's franchise from fully taking shape, which led to the DCEU's early conclusion and the DCU's upcoming hard reboot. Odd creative decisions, bad timing, clashing ideas, and unexpected events all caused the DC Extended Universe to decay and ultimately collapse.
DC now heads in a new direction with James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe while Zack Snyder focuses on his own projects outside the realm of comic book adaptations, including his 2023 sci-fi epic Rebel Moon. In an interview with THR, Zack Snyder looks back on his mindset when approaching a live-action adaptation of the DC Comics Universe. The director explains,
“I never looked at it as the job, ’Oh, I’m the architect of DC. I need to create entertainment for DC that sells toys and that is for the masses and fun for everyone. I didn’t care [about that]. I liked Batman, I liked Superman, I wanted to make something cool. You picked the wrong guy if you wanted a product.”
